Best Beach...ever?

Hi all, I'm new to this place, this tribe, this website. Just a general question for you fellow beach chasers, where is the best beach in the world and what makes it so awesome? I'm on a mission....

What a hard question to answer ... but really fun to ponder! I think probably the most beautiful stretch of beach I've ever experienced was a completely deserted, pristine stretch of ocean/sand/jungle somewhere between Punta Bete and Playa del Carmen, on the Yucatan Peninsula. It was maybe two miles south of the old Capitan Lafitte resort. This was in 1996, before any major development began in that area. What I loved was the juxtaposition of brilliant azure sea, clear and calm ... with totally virgin sand, white, gently sloping ... with wild dense lush encroaching jungle, palm trees leening precariously over the beach ... all spanning this narrow band of paradise.

But a much easier question would be breaking "best beach" down into categories. Here are my picks. I'm sure any travel magazine would come up with much more lavish selections, but mine incorporate the fact I can't afford many vacations in the Maldives or Seychelles....

Favorite beach for swimming: Punta Chivato, along the Sea of Cortez north of Mulege, Baja California
Favorite beach for people-watching: gotta be SoBe Miami
Favorite beach for sipping libations: Playa del Carmen, at the Blue Parrot Inn's Dragon Bar
Favorite beach for romance: Punta Bete, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Favorite beach to get away from it all: a rustic cottage on Brewer's Bay, Tortola, BVI
Favorite beach to bare it all: Cap d'Agde, France

Thanks for that! Your right I should have broken down my request into something more specific....Those are some fantastic beaches you mentioned and ones I will
certainly put on my list of places to go. For me the perfect beach amounts to long stretches of silky, white sand, clear blue warm waters-perfect for snorkeling and swimming. I think the best beach I have ever been to was near Byron Bay and for the love of God I can't remeber what it's called! Oh well...thanks again...Sam

my favorite so far is kalalau beach on the na pali coast of kauai. its an 11 mile hike in, so the huge beach is uncrowded. the backdrop is insanely green gorgeous steep mountains. you get your drinking water from a waterfall that crashes on the beach. there are sea caves, a valley with a stream and fruit trees, seals, dolphins and whales if you are lucky.

    Hi Samantha,

The most beautiful beach I've ever been to was a beach at Ko Surin (or Ko Similan) in Andaman Sea off Thailand. Water so clear you can see 30 feet to the bottom; unearthly turquoise blue, teeming with fish and coral. Beach is made of fine white sand as puffy as a cloud, punctuated with giant rocks, with a jungle/mountain backdrop. Serenity and heaven.
